It's the most northerly castle in Britain

A dilapidated 15th century castle on the Isle of Unst has just entered the property market — and it costs less than a London flat.

Muness Castle, Britain's most northerly castle, was originally built for Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie — an unpopular sheriff who is remembered for the oppression of the Shetland people. After being set on fire by privateers from Dunkirk in 1627, the castle fell into disrepair and now needs someone to completely renovate it.

Set within 160 acres of land in a stunning location, the castle forms a rectangular block with circular towers at the north and south angles. Included in sale are a number of crofter's cottages (mainly in derelict condition), barns, sprawling views, original turrets, and gun loops in the main block and in the southeastern tower. If you're up for a challenge, then this is the home for you.

The Isle of Unst is rich in Viking history, believed to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, Treasure Island. When you're not renovating the castle, enjoy all the island has to offer, such as watching the whales, dolphins, seas, puffins and birds. Top tip: autumn is the best season to spot grey and common seals around the sea caves.

Future Property Auctions say: "The property is currently maintained by Historic Environment Scotland, free of charge. The seller has also stated that he believes the purchase will come with a barony title, however has not been investigated."
